The Department of Organic and Wood-Based Materials of the iBMB arose in 2010 from the long existing department Structures and Application of Building Materials. The new department originated from the cooperation of the Fraunhofer Society and the Technical University Braunschweig, and works closely together with the Institute for Wood Research Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut (WKI) in Braunschweig.

The department is primarily concerned with the urgent issue of sustainability of organic construction materials in architecture and civil engineering. The Department of Structures and Application of Building Materials maintains an expertise in the fields of polymeric and inorganic construction materials, corrosion, and analytical investigation methods on materials and material failure. Meanwhile, the new department will additionally focus on organic materials used in construction - particularly wood and plastics. Our aim is to use organic materials for constructive and non-constructive purposes.

At the moment, the research program of the department is growing and research positions will be newly appointed. Further research activities will be done on the microscopic, submicroscopic, and atomic scale with the objective to develop new organic-based materials for both constructive an non-constructive use, as well as investigating climatic effects on the properties and functionality of proposed materials.
